How we work
Money Explained is XeConvert's editorial section: plain-English explainers on currencies and exchange rates, built on our own data.
Where the numbers come from
XeConvert has recorded daily mid-market exchange rates for about 480 currencies, precious metals and crypto-assets since December 2008. Rates are refreshed twice a day, and euro pairs are cross-checked against the European Central Bank's official reference rates on business days.
Every rate, percentage change, record high or low, chart and table in our articles is generated directly from that database when the page loads. Nobody types those figures by hand, so they are always current. When a figure in the text refers to a past date, the date is shown.
Isolated data errors (a single day far out of line with the days around it) are filtered out before any calculation.
How articles are checked
Each article starts from an editorial brief and a data file computed from our database. Before publication, every piece goes through the same checks:
- every figure in the text must match our data, otherwise it is corrected;
- every live chart and table must resolve to real data;
- dates, events and explanations are fact-checked, and anything doubtful is rewritten or removed;
- an article that fails a check is not published.
We do not predict exchange rates and we do not give personal investment, tax or legal advice. Our goal is to explain how money works so you can make your own decisions.
Mid-market rates vs. the rate you pay
The rates we show are mid-market rates: the midpoint between buying and selling prices on wholesale markets. Banks, card networks, exchange bureaus and money-transfer services usually add a margin on top, so the rate you are offered will typically be a little worse.
